Welcome to Danciger Tybar Ranch LLC

David and Emma Danciger started producing Angus cattle in the 1950s with the purchase of their first ranch south of Dallas, Texas. Their love of the land, Angus cattle, and agriculture prompted them to start Tybar Angus Ranch in 1980 with the purchase of 800 acres of very scenic, productive, irrigated land located at 6,500 feet above sea level, just four miles outside of Carbondale, Colorado. Several Forest Service and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) permits, contiguous to and nearby came with the ranch. This ranch is the headquarters for the Danciger Tybar Ranching operations. In 1993 the Dancigers expanded by purchasing 600 acres outside of Rifle, Colorado. This irrigated ranch at 6,300 feet also included a BLM permit nearby on Anvil points. This addition gave Tybar a place to expand, and is now known as Tybar Ranch Davies Mesa. This division is responsible for developing all of our weaned calves, which after being PAP tested and graded go into our yearling bull development program or if they are a heifer, they go onto the Heartland Cattle Company heifer development center in McCook, Nebraska.

In 1984, Colorado State University (CSU), along with Tybar Ranch began to collect some of the first PAP scores to combat brisket disease in Angus cattle. The evaluation involves a lung-heart catheterization to test the Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP), which provides a numerical score for the tendency of brisket disease. The lower the score, the lower the risk of brisket disease. Brisket disease is found in all breeds of cattle that reside at elevations of over 5,000 feet above sea level. When an animal is affected with brisket disease, this animal will show symptoms of an enlarged brisket. This enlargement of the brisket area is really fluid that is leaking past the heart valve and collecting in the chest cavity. If the animal is not removed to a much lower elevation, it will eventually die of heart failure.

After a few years of trying to use these scores to make breeding decisions it became obvious that knowledgeable help was required, especially in evaluation on new AI sires. That help came from CSU professor Dr. James Brinks. He assigned a graduate student to calculate PAP EPDs for all participating animals, bulls, cows and calves. These EPDs are a very important factor in planning the Tybar breeding program. This system helps our registered and commercial customers make new seedstock selections.

Working together, Tybar and CSU professor, Dr. Mark Enns, head of the Animal Science Department, have taken this EPD system for PAP to the next level by creating the first collection Web based program. This program, hosted by CSU, will allow any cattle breeder with PAP information to submit this data and receive a PAP EPD for those animals. This information will help new and established breeders decrease death loss due to brisket disease. This exciting program will be up and running this fall. Please check back periodically for more information.

As a result of years of research and careful selection for positive genetic traits, using AI, Embryo Transfer, and advanced PAP data, Danciger Tybar Ranch consists of 250 registered females. The ranch begins their bull sale season in January, at the National Western Stock Show, in Denver, Colorado, where the cattle are on display on the main alley. Tybar Ranch marketed 140 head of PAP tested yearling bulls through Private Treaty in 2011. We look forward to seeing you there and helping you find "Genes that fit".

Our 12th Annual Fall Production Sale on Saturday, November 5, 2011, will feature some of Tybar’s top AI replacement females. Over 140 bred females, embryos, and 10 PAP tested coming two-year-old bulls will be sold. Also, in cooperation with Dave Schafer, PhD, Resident Director and Association Research Director, for the University of Arizona’s V Bar V Ranch, 35 bred PAP-tested, commercial heifers will be offered.

Private Treaty Bulls are currently for sale at the ranch. View them.

Semen is available on a number of PAP-proven AI sires. Check our herd sire page for information.

Tybar PAP Consulting

Tybar Ranch has been testing for 30 years and after all this time we have learned a great deal in relation to PAP scores and genetic PAP trends within our herd and certain families of cattle. Every year we have received dozens of calls as well as visits from breeders that are interested in Brisket Disease prevention in the Angus Breed. Now with the cooperation of Colorado State University, Dr. Tim Holt and 30 years of PAP research and evaluation, Tybar Ranch has developed the next step in the prevention of Brisket Disease and PAP evaluation in cattle. Through Tybar's Genetic PAP trend consulting program it is possible for a breeder to evaluate the genetic trend line of an individual family or entire herd. This evaluation and establishment of PAP genetic trends is a great opportunity for breeders to evaluate cattle in their herds, and use this information as a possible culling tool. It is not enough to "just" have a PAP score to make genetic advancements. We now know that the establishment of genetic trends is very important.
